A large, heavy-bodied Old World species renowned for its unique ability to swim and dive underwater to catch prey like small fish. Native to the rainforests of Central Africa, particularly Cameroon, they are primarily obligate burrowers that construct complex subterranean tunnel systems reaching depths of up to 10 inches
- Size & Lifespan: Adult females can reach a massive leg span of 7 to 9 inches and live for 12 to 20+ years. Males are smaller and typically live only 3 to 5 years.
- Appearance: They feature a uniform reddish-brown or rusty orange/brown coloration with a velvety texture from dense short hairs.
- Temperament: Known as a defensive and shy species, they will bolt to their burrows when disturbed but may rear up and stridulate (hiss) if cornered.
- Aquatic Skill: They are one of the only tarantulas capable of fully submerging, using trapped air bubbles to stay underwater for extended periods
